Inkheart

“Books have to be heavy, because the whole world’s inside them.” – Cornelia Funke, Inkheart.

Let’s just imagine, for a brief moment in time, that you – yes you – had the ability to bring any of your favourite book characters into the real world.

*screams in excitement*

You’d leap at the chance, wouldn’t you? Well in this first class, second to none book that I am writing about today, this concept is actually explored! It’s what the entire book is about!

*falls off chair*

Inkheart tells the story of Meggie and her father Mo, who live a very quiet life, travelling around the world for Mo’s bookbinding business. The two are obsessed with books and their tiny cottage is filled to the brim with them.

Oooooohhhhh…..

The twelve year old girl’s world is turned upside down when, with the help of her Aunt Elinor (who is just the sassiest person in the fictional world) and a mysterious stranger named Dustfinger (who seems slightly…out of this world, if you will).

Without trying to give too much away, this fantastical book very realistically looks at what the consequences would be of fictional characters being dragged from their own world and thrown into ours. I know we all love the idea of a real – life Mr Darcy, but what about a medieval gangster named Capricorn and his gang of ruthless idiots?

The narrative, characterisation and description are all completely spot on, and just in case you find yourself wanting more, there’s two more books in the Inkheart series for all the fans out there. Believe me when I tell you that this book will transport you.
